The Human Half of Innovation

Intelligence is arriving faster than wisdom.

A new capability arrives and everyone asks what it can do. The harder question is what it will do—to the people who use it, the organizations that adopt it, the systems it quietly rearranges. The technology doesn’t answer that. We do, slowly, in the years after it lands.

I’ve spent three decades on both sides of that question. I’ve built companies on technology the market hadn’t accepted, decided which ventures deserved capital, and rebuilt organizations that couldn’t deliver their own strategy. I’ve also sung on stages, hosted a hundred dinners, and sat ten days in silence. For a long time I kept those apart. They belong together—and the second set is what taught me to do the first well.

That’s the human half: the purpose, the relationships, and the judgment that decide what innovation becomes. What it asks for is wisdom—which is not intelligence, and not certainty. It’s the capacity to act before the picture is complete, stay answerable to the people and consequences you set in motion, and revise when the world shows you were wrong. I’ve put that pursuit at the center of my life and work. Luckily for me, it isn’t work anyone finishes, and it isn’t work anyone does alone.
